Ulms goalie carried off the field
Worries cloud Ulm’s victory, Fortuna scores late again
In the kickoff of the 7th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga, Fortuna Düsseldorf celebrates an important victory. Like last week, the league leader scores decisively very late. In the relegation duel, promoted Ulm secures three points – and has to digest a shock.
Greuther Fürth – Fortuna Düsseldorf 1:2 (1:1)
Fortuna Düsseldorf ended its dark series at SpVgg Greuther Fürth and at least temporarily expanded its lead in the 2nd Bundesliga table. The team of coach Daniel Thioune, who remains flawless away from home, won 2-1 (1-1) against the Franconians and used a late penalty to secure the victory. This ended a streak of eight losses in Fürth for Düsseldorf. The pursuers Karlsruher SC, 1. FC Magdeburg, and SC Paderborn could catch up later on matchday seven. Isak Johannesson (90+1) converted a controversial penalty to score the winning goal. Earlier, Giovanni Haag (43) had put Düsseldorf in the lead on Friday evening in Fürth, but then a defensive mistake facilitated Dennis Srbeny’s quick equalizer (45). Shortly after, Fürth’s sporting director Rachid Azzouzi was sent off with a yellow-red card – he had vehemently protested a free-kick decision. Düsseldorf, who avoided a derby defeat against 1. FC Köln last weekend with a goal in stoppage time, started boldly. David Kownacki (16) and Jona Niemiec (26) missed early opportunities, then Fürth also had good chances through Noel Futkeu (37) and Branimir Hrgota (40). Haag and Srbeny scored before the break.
In the second half, the teams neutralized each other for the most part – until Nicolas Gavory (72) missed a huge opportunity to make it 2-1 for Düsseldorf. The full-back had already rounded Fürth goalkeeper Nahuel Noll but then missed the empty goal. Like against Köln, Düsseldorf eventually celebrated a late goal.
SSV Ulm – Eintracht Braunschweig 3:1 (2:0)
Promoted SSV Ulm celebrated its second consecutive victory with a 3-1 (2-0) win over Eintracht Braunschweig and gained some breathing room in the lower half of the table. However, the relief was mixed with concern for first-choice goalkeeper Christian Ortag, who may have suffered a serious injury and was carried off the field on a stretcher. Romario Rösch (14) converted a failed Braunschweig clearance into the lead, and Maurice Krattenmacher doubled the score against the league’s weakest defense in the 39th minute. Shortly after the break, Braunschweig’s Sven Köhler (50) was sent off with a yellow-red card for repeated fouls. Felix Higl responded to Eintracht’s goal by Levente Szabo (76) while playing with one man down with a 3-1 penalty (84).
Both teams celebrated their first wins of the season last week. This victory was especially significant for SSV in two ways: with a 3-1 away win at SV Elversberg, Ulm won a second division game for the first time in 23 years. The match between the promoted side and Braunschweig, who were already in danger of relegation last season, was initially characterized by many inaccuracies. SSV scored with their first shot on goal. Krattenmacher brought the ball into the center of the box shortly before the baseline. The ball bounced off a defender into the back, where Rösch placed it centrally in the empty goal. After that, not much happened until the hosts struck coldly on a counterattack.
There was a sour note in the second half for Ulm: SSV goalkeeper Christian Ortag was carried off the field on a stretcher after falling while catching a cross, possibly injuring his cervical spine. Niclas Thiede made his second division debut in his place. Fifteen minutes were added due to the long break, but after Ulm’s third goal, Braunschweig had little left to offer.
